Dimapur, September 5

Educational schools across Nagaland today honored their teachers on Teacher’s Day, September 5. The main Teacher’s Day program for the state was celebrated in Kohima in the Nagaland Baptist Church Council Convention Centre. The program was organized by the Directorate of School Education. Minister for Road & Bridges and Parliamentary Affairs Kuzholuzo Nienu was the chief guest of the occasion.Kuzholuzo Nienu said that the basic foundation to build any strong and vibrant community in any society is based on human resources development. In this, he described teachers as the ‘ultimate Pillars’ that build the foundation. Nagaland needs more of Dr. Radhakrishans for a strong, effective, sincere, committed and vibrant society, he said.
September 5 every year is observed as ‘Teacher’s Day’ in India, also commemorating the birthday of former president of India Dr. Radhakrishan.  Dr. Radhakrishan was a great philosopher, a scholar, a thinker and an exemplary teacher, Nienu reminded the gathering.
Talking about the various facilities and educational schemes provided by the government, Nienu urged all the schools to maintain “gender equality” and “social equality” when dealing with the students. He also referred to the Midday Meal tragedy in Bihar where scores of children fell ill or died. Nienu was confident that such a tragedy ‘would not happen in Nagaland.’
The politician also urged the teachers to take ‘resolute steps’ to rededicate themselves to living up to the expectations of the people. He cautioned the teachers to be ‘watchful’ so that “cyber crime, sexual harassment, use of intoxicants, drug abuse, ragging” are not allowed in the schools and colleges. Such ills can be removed by counseling rather than corporal punishment, he said.
While appreciating the contributions of private schools in ‘producing good academic results with quality education,’ Nienu commented that the negative results of the government schools should serve as a wakeup-call for improvement. This would give private schools healthy competition, he said. He emphasized on the need for ‘total transformation’ of government schools. Government schools deal with students from economically-poor backgrounds and they cannot be ignored, Nienu said. The minister encouraged the teachers to develop “healthy team spirit and also a spirit of competition” within the schools.  “Certainly our students are our future but our teachers will be responsible for the future that we are going to built for better or worse,” he said.
The minister further asserted that the government is doing all possible means to do away with the practice of proxy teachers in government schools while also calling upon the teachers to be dedicated and sincere towards their profession.
He also said that considering the poor performance of the government schools as against the private schools in matriculation and higher secondary examinations, there is need for total transformation of the government schools. The minister has also declared September 6 as holiday for all schools in the state.
President of Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) Tongpang Ozukum also spoke. He said “by profession we become doctors, engineers and bureaucrats but we don’t celebrate such day. But the entire world celebrates Teacher’s Day – it is because society has considered teachers to be nation builders.” The students’ leader also said teachers have the duty to shape student into a ‘complete package’ that is a good citizen. While acknowledging the service of the teachers, however said as students they would not tolerate any teachers in service with fake certificates.
He therefore asked the state government to immediately terminate the service of such teachers so that the genuine teachers can be an inspiration for the students.
Parliamentary Secretary for Land Resources, Justice & Law, Labour and Employment Dr. Neikesalie Nicky Kire administered pledge to teachers to be sincere and dedicated in their service while Commissioner & Secretary School Education & SCERT T. Imkonglemba Ao gave the concluding remarks.
All together thirty three teachers from across Nagaland received State Teachers’ Award of Rs, 15,000 each with certificates during the occasion in Kohima.
