Dimapur, Aug. 24 (EMN): A man has been sentenced to one year and three months of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting his student inside a school at Pfutsero in Phek district.

The ruling pertains to an incident that occurred on November 12, 2014 in which the convict, named Founder Chung, an assistant teacher at Nazareth School in Pfutsero, sexually assaulted one of his students (a minor girl) after locking her up inside the staff room’s toilet.

The verdict was delivered by Special Judge (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act), Mezivolu T Therieh on August 16 but the copy of the order was made available to the local newspapers only on Saturday.

Apart from the jail sentence, the convict was also ordered to pay INR 2300 to the victim ‘by way of compensation.’

He appealed for leniency from the judge but was refused.

“Parents with lot of trust send their daughters to school believing that teachers will not only educate but also protect them. But this trust if parents shatter when their daughters are sexually harassed by none other than a teacher of the school, and that too, in a toilet of staff room. The hands of accused, as teacher of school, were meant to protect and ensure safety of the victim. He instead used his hands to sexually harass and abuse the victim. Such an act of the accused does not permit me to show leniency on him,” the judge remarked.
