Tobu Area Students’ Union (TASU) has called off its proposed mass rally following a letter of request from the SDEO

DIMAPUR — Following a letter of request from the sub-divisional education officer (SDEO) on Thursday, the Tobu Area Students’ Union (TASU) has called off its proposed mass rally, which was to be held on Thursday.

The union had earlier announced to hold a mass rally at Tobu headquarters and seal the office of the SDEO, to protest the shortage of teachers in government schools.

The union in a receipt of letter to the SDEO informed that the TASU called off the mass rally after the SDEO in his letter requested to meet the TASU team on August 29, to discuss the “issues personally.”

The union stated that the proposed rally was “withheld on a positive note” and that the SDEO’s intervention would solve the grievances faced by the student community.

“That Sir, since a meeting has been conveyed by your good self on 29th August 2023, we further have a following list of demands to be considered, out of which some have to be kept ready on the said date,” TASU stated.

Insisting on proper maintenance of office infrastructure and necessary documents, the union demanded that office infrastructure such as computer sets and all official documents of the teachers, including service books, should be placed during the August 29 meeting.

“It has been learned that many of the staff are keeping the official documents and equipment which are supposed to be at the office, at their personal residence, which is a total violation of the service rule,” the union stated.

Demanding immediate functioning of the SDEO Tobu, the union pointed out that the non-functioning of the office has hampered the academic career of the students as the teachers posted under SDEO Tobu have to travel to Mon district headquarters even to obtain the signature of any staff as the majority of the staff are stationed at Mon headquarters.

With the academic session 2023 coming to an end, the TASU also requested the SDEO to inspect all the schools in the sub-division and initiate strict action against teachers engaging in proxy teaching.

Further, the union demanded immediate posting of teachers at GMS Shammnyu, GPS Pessao-B and GPS Shinnyu.

The union went on to state that if the August 29 meeting proves inconclusive and if the department fails to meet the union’s demand, it will be compelled to re-initiate its own course of action, even to the extent of closing down the schools or imposing indefinite bandh across the sub-division.
