Tarun Gogoi highlights Gandhi’s ideals of non-violence, tolerance

GUWAHATI, JANUARY 30
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today asserted that Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals of non-violence and religious tolerance are more relevant in the times when “intolerance” and “extremism” are on the rise.
“On the occasion of Gandhiji’s death anniversary today, I pay homage to this great soul for his selfless invaluable contribution to humanity,” the Chief Minister tweeted.
Thousands of Congressmen also took the pledge to fight against evil forces and carry forward the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, he added in the tweet.The Congress party had organised a state-wide booth committee meeting today with the chief minister attending a meeting at Ward No 10 in Upper Assam’s Jorhat town.
The Assam government also observed Martyrs’ Day on the 67th death anniversary of the Father of the Nation and those who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for the country’s freedom.
‘Will contest the 2016 Assembly polls from Titabar seat’

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday said he will contest in the 2016 Assembly Elections from the Titabar constituency in Jorhat district.
“I will of course contest in the 2016 elections. From today I will lead the electoral battle with renewed vigour,” Gogoi reporters on the sidelines of a booth meeting at ward no. 10 in Jorhat town.
There were media reports about the possibility of Gogoi not contesting in the next Assembly Elections.
On reports about his detractors, those above 70-years of age and non-performers being denied a Congress party ticket, Gogoi said, most of the contestants will be from among the existing 79 MLAs with some new faces.”
Gogoi has served as the Chief Minister consecutively since 2001 leading his party to a record three electoral wins in Assam.
