KOHIMA, SEPTEMBER 10
Parliamentary Secretary for Urban Development, Zhaleo Rio today graced the 2011-14 tenure ending conference of Angamimiapfü Mechü Krotho (AMK), the apex women organization of the Angami community held here at IG Stadium, Meriema,3 Kohima.
Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, the parliamentary secretary said that people from other communities consider Angami women to be hard working, honest and possess good moral and leadership qualities. He called upon the gathering to emulate these qualities and set good examples for others to follow.
Rio lauded the AMK initiative with the Kohima Municipal Council, providing an area of the newly inaugurated AMK building for street vendors to promote and sell organic products. Pointing that almost all food items are imported into the state from outside, he encouraged the organization to form a farmers/vegetable growers’ cell and organize capacity building programs and activities in rural areas to encourage organic farming and supply them to bigger towns. This will help improve and enhance the people’s economy, he said. Also, he stated that migration from rural to urban areas is gradually increasing along with rise in unemployment and people without means of livelihood tend to choose wrong paths and indulge in anti social activities. Towards this, he informed that there are schemes under the Urban Development department called self-employment for urban poor which people can avail and become more productive.
Touching upon sanitation issue, the parliamentary secretary urged upon AMK women to inculcate good civic sense and hygienic practices particularly in the state capital which currently generates around 50-60 tons of garbage daily. Take the initiative to beautify your towns and villages, do not wait for others to do it for you, he exhorted.
He also called upon the women to play a more proactive role as teachers and advisors in their homes and build parent-child relationships. He underscored the need to encourage frank sharing in the family in today’s modern society as young people have the tendency to be influenced easily by modern unworthy culture/practices, and many youngsters become victims due to ignorance.
Meanwhile, Rio paid tributes to Angami women who achieved the distinction of becoming the first among Naga women in different fields such as Dr. Khrielieü (medical), Rano (MP), Rev. Beilie-ü (education and religion), Neidonuo (social activist), late Zaputuoü (orphanage) and Dr. Maj. Neikhrietuonuo (scaling Mt. Everest) among others. While expressing pride for their achievements, the parliamentary secretary expressed hope that the younger generation will draw inspiration from them and strive to be successful and bring laurels to the community as well as the state.
During the programme, Angami Public Organization (APO) president, Keneingunyü Sekhose released a book on AMK term 2011-14 achievement. The programme was chaired by outgoing president AMK, Salhoutuonuo Kruse.
