DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 8: Sungjemyanger from Holy Cross School was declared as the winner of the first Ao Spelling Bee competition while Ngangshimenla from Dimapur Mission Higher Secondary School was declared second winner held today at Elim hall, DABA.
The first Ao Spelling Bee Competition was organised in commemoration of the 13th anniversary of Tit Yimyim, an Ao vernacular and organised by Lenjeter (Ao vernacular monthly magazine) in collaboration with the Department of Linguistics, Nagaland University.
Nungtisola Imsong from St Paul Higher Secondary School was declared third winner, and Imlisangla from Dimapur Mission Higher Secondary School and Limatola from Dimapur Mission Higher Secondary School were declared fourth and fifth winners respectively. Altogether 21 students from Classes VIII- XII from Dimapur district participated in the programme which was sponsored by Tir Yimyim
Director of NEZCC and special guest, Lipokmar Tzüdir, spoke on the importance of one’s local dialect which according to him should not be forgotten with modernity.
Stating that ‘myths can never be translated to modernity’, the Director said clothes and generations may change with time like all other worldly things but language will never grow old.
Emphasising on the ‘Customs and traditions with language’, Lipokmar said one’s root and heritage is attached with language that should not be separated and that everything is connected with one’s language.
With no written evidences, he said what one learnt will have clashes with what one wishes to learn resulting in memory lapses but what is repeated can be stored in memory. He also urged the gathering to research and find one’s past language as he said ‘language connects with the legacy of the past’.
Editor of Tir Yimyim, K Temjen Jamir, while welcoming the gathering, spoke on the importance of organising such competitions as he said children do not read much like the past with the advent of the computer.
Google search and internet have made children lazy to read while usage of abbreviations in messages and WhatsApp has become a trend which will weaken the grammar and spellings of the children, he said.
Editor of Tir Yimyim and a senior citizen C Walu Walling were the judges.
Editor of Lenjeter, Repalemzüng informed that 5 students each from Mokokchung and Kohima have been selected in the recent past while another 5 will be selected from Dimapur. He said the selected students from these districts will vie at the upcoming Ao Kaketshir Mungdang (AKM) conference scheduled at Changtongya in 2017.
Sungjemyanger from Holy Cross School was declared the first winner, while Ngangshimenla from Dimapur Mission Higher Secondary School was declared second winner, Nungtisola Imsong from St Paul Higher Secondary School was declared third winner, and Imlisangla from Dimapur Mission Higher Secondary School and Limatola from Dimapur Mission Higher Secondary School were declared fourth and fifth winners respectively.
