Dimapur, Sep 9 (EMN): Disability rights activist and winner of Lemon Tree Helen Keller Award 2015, Diethono Nakhro, has urged the students to be agents of change in the society and create an enabling environment so people with disabilities will be treated as equal citizens and enjoy a normal life.
Diethono said this during an awareness programme on disability organised by Yemhi Memorial College, Dimapur, on September 7 in the college conference hall.
During interaction with the students, she shared about her life’s journey as a disabled person and her determination to fight back disability. As a passionate campaigner, she said her mission is to conduct awareness programmes on disability in colleges and schools to motivate the young minds to become agents of change in the society.
Highlighting on the unfriendly environment for a disabled person in Nagaland and the lack of accessibility in everything, she stressed that her campaign is to change people’s mindset so that the environment will become better and people with disabilities will be treated as equal citizens and enjoy a normal life.
She encouraged the students to lend their support and raise their voice and get involved in social issues. She also motivated the students by encouraging them to believe in themselves, form a clear goal in life and work hard for it, be self disciplined and always cultivate positive attitude.
The programme was chaired by the college principal, Makhan Chetia and vote of thanks was delivered by Amongla Imsong, Assistant Professor.
The Anti-Tobacco Committee of the college also distributed certificates and prizes to the students for essay writing and poster competitions held in the college on the topic “Why I choose to be tobacco free.”
Diethono Nakhro also gave away prizes to winners of the essay writing and poster competitions.
