Students urged to acquire skills, not just education

The director for Soil & Water Conservation, Viliehu Nguzhu on Friday urged students to ‘acquire knowledge’ and be practical.

The government servant was addressing the 63rd general session of the Khulazu Basa Students’ Union as the event’s guest speaker, on December 27 at Khulazu Basa in Phek district.

In his address, Nguzhu said education is beyond learning, and that it is an application that defines the quality of education.

According to the official, the importance placed on job security by many educated youths is because they acquire only degrees but lacks the application of their education. He termed this condition ‘quantitative education.’

He advised the students to be ambitious in seeking and acquiring skills and its development. In the modem age skills matter for sustainability and for living, he told the gathering.

‘Without curiosity, student life becomes casual,’ Nguzhu told the gathering. He urged the students to learn their life lessons. He asked them to develop the habit of being curious by applying the principles of the ‘5’ Ws: What, where, when, whom, and which with H, standing for ‘how.’

In other matters, Nguzhu lamented that many people misuse religion. The government servant opined that religion must use a person. He said, ‘There is one almighty’ irrespective of a person’s religion. He reminded the gathering to ‘be passionate about your religion’ in that way.

Also, the government official spoke about the urgency for society to start learning about work culture. He told the students to make it ‘a way of life,’ stating that ‘laziness is a problem that the society faces today as they move toward progress.

Other highlights of the programme included the presidential address delivered by Khosato Chuzho and a presentation from Zanubu Mission school.
