KOHIMA — In a run-up to the 78th India’s Independence Day celebration and commemorating World Youth Day, a programme titled ‘A day with company commander’ was held at Councilor Hill of 13th Assam Rifles in Kohima on Tuesday.

Speaking at the event, Maj. Gen. Manish Kumar, Inspector General of Assam Rifles (IGAR- North), emphasised the importance of nation-building and the ongoing campaign against drug abuse and mental health issues. While reflecting on the significance of Independence Day, he urged the citizens to contemplate the nation’s progress and future aspirations.

He also highlighted the strong bond between the soldiers and the local population, noting that the troops, who have left their families behind, find a sense of family within the community through such events.

The army officer pointed out the presence of bright students, aspiring doctors, engineers and NCC cadets, emphasising their roles as future nation-builders. He encouraged them to continue their educational and personal growth and contribute towards the nation’s development.

Kumar mentioned about North East Initiative Development Agency (NEIDA), a collaborative initiative in Kohima, which is aimed at preparing children to become tomorrow’s professionals in fields such as medicine, engineering and civil services.

Kumar also spoke about the importance of training provided to NCC cadets and urged the cadets to fully utilise the opportunities to become future officers and soldiers.

Miss Northeast 2023, Kenei Ritse, who officially kicked off  ‘Breaking the Silence’ campaign, an initiative focused on mental health and substance abuse, spoke on key aspects of mental health, including what it is, how mental health issues begin and the triggers that can exacerbate them.

As a psychology graduate, Ritse emphasised on stigmas surrounding mental health and substance abuse, urging people to break those taboos by reaching out and seeking therapy, which she framed as a sign of strength and not weakness.

She also shared practical ways to take care of mental health by replacing negative self-talk with positive thoughts and affirmations and advocating compassion.

The campaign, specifically targeting the youth, aims to create a ripple effect in the community that fosters a more supportive environment for mental well-being.

Miss Nagaland 2022, Hikali Achumi, mentioned how the ‘breaking the silence’ campaign was launched to focus on mental health and substance abuse.

She expressed gratitude to the Assam Rifles for their support and also highlighted the campaign’s goal to raise awareness among youth about the dangers of drug abuse.

While expressing concern on the increase of drug abuse among youth and teenagers, she pointed out that the campaign was aimed at educating young students on the dangers of substance abuse. By equipping them with knowledge, she expressed hope to empower the students to make informed choices that safeguard their future.

She further called for collective action to prevent and address the rising problem of substance abuse among young people.
