Dimapur, May 19 (EMN): History department of Sazolie College in Kohima undertook a visit to Zapami village on May 12 as part of its departmental activity. The department activity was part of the MA (History) programme to acquaint students with field exposures to enable them to relate to what they are learning in the classrooms.

An update from the college stated that Zapami village, located 63 km away from Kohima, is known for keeping alive the practice of the indigenous craft of making textiles out of a stinging nettle plant called Thebvo (Kuzhale dialect). It stated that the indigenous textile making bore witness to the cultural attainment of the Naga people and negates the historicity that ‘nanga’ meaning ‘naked’ was the derivation of the term “Naga.”

It mentioned that the village also houses the Heritage Museum established in 2017 to preserve the rich cultural heritage that is unique to the village.

It further stated that the visit to Zapami village brought to light the need to revisit, and rewrite the socio-cultural history of the Nagas from an insider’s perspective, an alternative to the colonial and post-colonial narratives written from a narrow specific-centrism.
