GHS Wakching students write exams under leaking roof
DIMAPUR — The condition of the already dilapidated Government High School Wakching building is said to have deteriorated due to the incessant rain over the past few days, as the desks and benches in the classrooms are drenched, thanks to leaking roof.
In the video footage of the school building shared by the Wakching Area Students’ Union (WASU) president Temwang Angh to Eastern Mirror, students can be seen writing exams even as rain water drips from the roof of the classroom.
Students and staff of the school have a hard time even if there is light rain, Angh said, adding” “Imagine if it was heavy rainfall.” He lamented that students have no other option but to write exam under the leaky roof.
The student leader said that no positive response has been received from the concerned department despite haven written to District Education Officer (DEO) Mon on September 13 2023 to issue dismantling order of the building to make way for construction of a temporary structure.
‘WASU will initiate the construction of temporary building in collaboration with the govt. if concern department feel the need to do the same,’ read the letter.
Angh said the DEO Mon subsequently requested the principal director of School Education to take all possible measures in the interest of student community, citing the deplorable condition of the building, but to no avail.
It may be mentioned that the GHS Wakching was established in 1932, before it was upgraded to Government Middle School in 1945 and then to GHS in 1958. The current school building was constructed in 1972 and has not been renovated or repaired since, thus leaving it in a deplorable condition.
