Students get insight on human rights and social values

HUMAN Rights Educator for NE India, Dr. Shyam Bhadra Medhi has likened human rights, social ethics and values to two sides of a coin which are closely interconnected and said that if human rights are not put into practice in the social order than the society would be without any ethics and values.Dr. Shyam Bhadra Medhi said this in his speech during the two day national workshop on Human Rights Education on the theme ‘Promotion of ethics and human values’ which began today at ICFAI University premise, 6th Mile Sovima, Dimapur. The workshop was jointly organized by Department of Political Science, Patkai Christian College (PCC, Autonomous) in collaboration with ICFAI University, Nagaland and sponsored by University Grants Commission.
Dr. Shyam Bhadra Medhi has lauded both the institutions for giving importance and taking up this issue while acknowledging that he had never come across any University or colleges taking up topic on promotion of ethics and human values.
Stressing on human rights, he said every individual talk about human rights but added that human duty is equally important which should be put into action by every society.
Referring to Article 51(a) of the Indian Constitution which states ‘to strive towards excellence in all spheres of individual and collective activity so that the nation constantly rises to higher levels of endeavor and achievement,’ he said that human rights is a subject which is emphasized by communist, capitalist or socialist groups because it is committed to human welfare and development.
Speaking at the inaugural function as the chief guest, Rev. Dr. Tuisem A Shishak, Principal Emeritus Patkai Christian College (Autonomous), quoted ‘Democracy has been described as assistance of freedom; is a strand of foreign policy adopted by governments and international organizations that seek to support the spread of democracy as a political system around the world.
While citing passage from the Bible, he believed that since God has created man in His own image, He is the maker of all humanity. He advised all individuals to act according to what one would expect from the other persons.
The two day workshop would witness eminent resource persons having interactive session with the students. The resource persons for the workshop are retired IAS and Human Rights Educator for NE India Dr. Shyam Bhadra Medhi; Principal City Law College P Leonard Aier; and Director of Prodigals Home, K Ela.
Earlier, the invocation was pronounced by Bible Lecturer PCC Asen Longchari and the welcome address by Dr. Charles P Alexander, Pro-Vice Chancellor ICFAI University. Co-coordinator of Human Rights Education Faculty, Dept. of Pol. Sc, PCC, Eniro Murry spoke on the concept of the workshop. The vote of thanks was rendered by faculty of the Department of Pol. Sc, PCC, Ruokoneino Ziekhru and the benediction pronounced by faculty of the Department of Management ICFAI University.
