The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 emphasises a student-centric approach in higher education. It highlights the importance of active student participation in shaping their educational journey, developing skills for the future, and contributing to the nation’s growth.

1. Holistic and Multidisciplinary Education

•             Flexible Learning Pathways: NEP 2020 encourages students to choose their own subjects, fostering a multidisciplinary education. Students can pursue different combinations of majors and minors, making their education more well-rounded.

•             Personal Growth and Development: The policy advocates for a holistic education that goes beyond academics, incorporating sports, arts, and ethics, encouraging students to develop not just intellectually but emotionally and socially.

2. Active Learners

•             Critical Thinking and Creativity: Students are encouraged to move away from rote learning and actively engage in critical thinking, problem-solving, and creative activities.

•             Research and Innovation: The policy emphasises the role of students in research. They are encouraged to participate in research projects and contribute to knowledge creation.

3. Skill Development and Employability

•             Vocational Education: NEP 2020 integrates vocational education into mainstream education to ensure students develop practical skills. Students are encouraged to engage in internships and hands-on experiences alongside theoretical learning.

•             Focus on 21st Century Skills: Students are expected to develop skills like digital literacy, communication, collaboration, and leadership, which are crucial for future employment.

4. Flexible Exit and Entry Points

•             Multiple Entry and Exit: Students can enter and exit degree programs at various points. This means students can take a break if needed and return to their studies, ensuring flexibility and reducing drop-out rates.

•             Academic Bank of Credits (ABC): NEP introduces the Academic Bank of Credits, where students can store and transfer their academic credits. This allows for greater mobility and flexibility in completing degree programmes.

5. Inclusivity and Equity

•             Equal Opportunities for All: NEP stresses that students from all backgrounds, including disadvantaged communities, should have access to higher education. This includes financial aid, scholarships, and mentorship programs.

•             Role in Nation-Building: The policy encourages students to become responsible citizens by promoting values of ethics, social responsibility, and contributing to societal development through knowledge and innovation.

6. Student Engagement in Governance

•             Student Participation in Institutional Governance: Students are given the opportunity to participate in decision-making, helping shape the direction of their institutions.

•             Student Mentorship: Peer learning and mentorship are promoted, where senior students mentor their juniors in both academics and personal development.

7. Lifelong Learning

•             Continuous Learning: NEP envisions students as lifelong learners, encouraging them to continuously update their knowledge and skills through online courses, distance education, and other learning opportunities, even after graduation.

8. Technology-Enhanced Learning

•             Digital Learning: With the increasing role of technology, students are expected to engage in online learning and digital literacy. NEP promotes the use of e-learning platforms, online courses, and open educational resources (OERs).
