DIMAPUR — With an aim to provide free tuition classes for primary students from classes 1 to 5 exclusively for the government schools in Shamator town, the Shamator Town Students’ Union (STSU) has launched a project called ‘Khimtan’ on August 25 on the theme “Opening doors through literacy.”
Under the project, the union has opened two centres namely at GPS Shamator ‘B’ and the other at GMS NAP sector.
An update from the union stated that the ‘Khimtan’ project was launched with a prayer by Chuno Chuba, YBBA finance and development secretary, at GPS Shamator ‘B’ centre and by Akumkhiung, pastor of NAP sector, at GMS NAP Sector centre.
The word ‘Khimtan’ in Yimkhiung dialect means foundation.
The project aims to provide supplementary education exclusively to the children studying in government schools in order to bring them up to an academic level and reduce drop-outs at higher grades. Besides, keeping in mind the lack of home studies due to many factors such as lack of proper guidance and negligence from parents and many students being domestic helpers etc., the project also aims to provide assistance to students in completing their homework, clarifying their doubts and paying more attention to the subjects they are weak at.
In addition, the project would impart life skills like personality development and awareness of cleanliness and good habitual practices.
It informed that a total of 129 students from five schools have enrolled themselves for the free tuition. Altogether, 9 teachers are engaged in the project.
