Strike paralyse normal life in Manipur

Imphal, Aug. 9 (EMN): Life came to standstill in Manipur particularly in the state capital as shops and markets remained closed after the 19 hour general strike came into force from 5 am on Friday.

To demand justice to the mysterious death of a school girl in a hostel, the strike was called by the Joint Action Committee (JAC).

A girl student of class VII in a private school in Imphal west district was found death inside her hostel room on July 18.

In the greater Imphal area and some other parts of the state, supporters were seen blocking roads by sitting on the roads and setting up barricades. However, no untoward incident was reported till filing of the report.

The roads in Imphal wore a desolate look due to suspension of inter-state and inter-city transport services.

The functioning of most of the government and private offices were severely affected while educational institutions, markets, and business establishments, remained closed. Some of the schools rescheduled their routine examinations.

Supporting the strike, some womenfolk also staged sit in demonstration on the road side in some areas.

The JAC accused the authorities of delaying investigation of the incident.

Appealing to JAC and public to share facts and evidences with investigating agency,

Briefing the reporters SP Imphal west district said that the department is investigating into the case in all aspects, but the ongoing atmosphere has hampered the investigation.

Meanwhile, two JAC leaders who were arrested in connection with the bandh have been remanded in the judicial custody.
