State Taekwondo c’ship kicks off in Kohima

KOHIMA, AUGUST 18: The 29th Nagaland State Taekwondo Championship 2016 commenced on Thursday at Indira Gandhi Stadium in Kohima.216 players including 150 boys and 65 girls from eight districts are participating in the two-day championship that will conclude on Friday.
The participating representing the distrcits are from Kohima, Phek, Dimapur, Peren, Mokokchung, Tuensang, Mon and Kiphire.
Talking to Eastern Mirror, State Taekwondo coach Visabeiu Peseyie informed that numerous Naga Taekwondo players who have won medals at the national level are also taking part in the championship. Few among them are Heutingyi Zeliang, Keyinchigonbe Zeliang, Ngaiching Phom, Neikhozo Naprantsu, Tenloi, Shanlanthung Ovung and Repinku Tikhir. He added “Most of the medal winners are currently undergoing training at IG Stadium, Kohima.”
Heutingyi Zeliang, to his credit, has won three gold medals, one silver, and a bronze at the national level, while Ngaiching Phom and Keyinchigonbe Zeliang has both won two gold medals, silver and a bronze each at the national level.Neikhozo Naprantsu also has won a gold medalist at the 33rd National Sub-Junior Championship held at Andhra Pradesh, while Tenloi bagged a silver medal and Shanlanthung Ovung and Repinku Tikhir has won a bronze medal each.
The selected players, both boys and girls of the various categories, will represent the state at the national level.
The National Junior Championship is scheduled to be held in the month of September at Punjab, while the National Sub-Junior Championship would be held in October in Goa.
Peseyie further informed that Nagaland would be hosting this year’s National Sub-Junior Championship, in the month of November. The venue and dates for the National Cadet Championship are yet to be known, he informed.
