State Congress in touch with INDIA alliance partners – Jamir
MOKOKCHUNG — Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president Supongmeren Jamir on Monday disclosed that the state Congress is in touch with other political parties under the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA).
Addressing a press conference at District Congress Committee office, Mokokchung, the NPCC president said that the alliance is ready to face the upcoming Lok Sabha election in the state.
Jamir said that the state Congress, which is currently touring different districts, is in a position and has the capacity to fight against corruption and stand for the people.
“We fighting not only for the state alone, we are fighting to send a candidate who can really represent the state in the parliament,” he replied to the questions posed by the media.
He also confided that 20 years as an opposition party in the state has baptised the party and enabled the party to face challenges and difficulties and to lead the people.
The NPCC president also informed that six intending candidates have approached them for a party ticket. However, the party suggested they be in touch with grassroots people as without “consensus,” the NPCC cannot go ahead.
“Congress is proudly with the grass-root people and will definitely work for the people and we are expecting the best response from the people in general,” Jamir said.
Jamir also observed that the people of Nagaland want a “change” but the aspiration of the people through the election has become less hopeful.
“Whom do we blame – the system, the political leaders or the voters? We need thorough analysis, we need genuine responsible leaders who can really sacrifice for the people and the society,” he said.
He also claimed that the election expenditure incurred by the candidates in the last Nagaland Legislative Assembly election was more than the state’s annual budget.
“We cannot expect not much from an opposition-less government,” he added.
“When 60 MLAs are sitting under one umbrella, who will fight for the common people? They are sitting and eating in one kitchen, they don’t bother for the voters,” he alleged.
He went on to state that going by the trend of opposition-less government in Nagaland, the common people “will not have any expectations.”
In such a scenario, Jamir said the Congress can play the opposition role in the state, and called upon the civil society, church organisations and NGOs to come together to fight for the people.
He further cautioned that the general public should display “party colours” but should be rational in their approach and play a constructive role in bringing the changes.
