State Agriculture department celebrates World Environment Day
DIMAPUR — The Department of Agriculture, Nagaland, celebrated World Environment Day on the theme ‘Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience plantation drive’ at Agri Expo, Chümoukedima, on June 5, with Advisor of Agriculture, Mhathung Yanthan, as the special guest.
In his speech, the advisor stressed on land restoration as a key pillar for protection and revival of the ecosystem, stating that, “our land is under increasing pressure from deforestation, land degradation and urbanisation,” an update from district agriculture officer, Chümoukedima stated.

Yanthan encouraged the participants to involve and empower the younger generation in environmental initiatives, to foster a sense of responsibility and stewardship for the planet.
In order to sustain agriculture, he said ecological balance should be maintained natural resources protected and taken care. He advised the participant to adapt according to changing climate pattern by accommodating the local weather conditions. The advisor concluded his speech with the quote “Act locally, think globally.”
Earlier, additional director of Agriculture, C Peter Yanthan, in his welcome address, shared that the event is a global event which is observed to encourage awareness and to take up actions to protect the environment.
He expounded the major role played by the environment in human health, impacting the society and economy. Planting trees today will aid the future generation, he added.
The formal programme was followed by a plantation drive in the vicinity. Altogether, 86 participants including officials from various districts attended the programme, the update stated.
