  • DIMAPUR — In an attempt to blend academic learning with hands-on community engagement, the Department of Social Work, St. Xavier College, Senapati organised ‘Rural Practicum’ for its students from April 22 to 26th at Maram Khongnem.

  • A total of 24 Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) students, along with three Assistant Professors, participated in the five-day fieldwork programme, according to an update received here.

  • One of the key highlights of the programme was the Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA), which included a detailed transect walk and social mapping exercise to understand the village’s resources, challenges, and lifestyle. Students also carried out a cleanliness drive, planted trees and installed dustbins at strategic location in an effort to promote environmental cleanliness and sustainability, said the update.

  • As part of the field experience, the students conducted a socio-economic survey to assess the living standards and needs of the villagers, provided academic support and encouragement to children of the village, and helped the villagers in manual work.

Students and faculty of Social Work deparftment, St. Xavier College, Senapati, during the workshop on menstrual hygiene, conducted in collaboration with AMYAA, at Maram Khongnem.

 

  • As many as three awareness workshops on menstrual hygiene, environmental and wildlife protection, as well as facilities and services provided by AMYAA (NGO) in and around Senapati were conducted during the programme with an aim to bridge the gap between available resources and the villagers. Free sanitary pads were also distributed to the people in collaboration with AMYAA, an organisation that ‘works for all-round development of the tribal poor with special attention towards the most vulnerable groups of the society, children, youth, women and farmers.’

  • The five-day fieldwork programme was an enriching and a learning experience, reaffirming the vital role of academic institutions in community development and social responsibility, added the update.
