St. John College students visit hydroponics farm

Dimapur, Feb. 2 (EMN): Botany students of St. John College, Dimapur, visited a hydroponics farm located in Indisen owned by Marbong, an M.Sc graduate in Agriculture (Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry) from SHUATS, Allahabad Agriculture University, on January 31.

Marbong is currently working as a livelihood coordinator of Nagaland Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) under the department of Rural Development for three years, stated an update from the college. Marbong stated that he always wanted to cultivate and grow plants, but because of water scarcity in his area gardening and farming was very difficult. It was during the onset of the first pandemic lockdown that he decided to explore and delve into hydroponics and decided to build a small greenhouse exclusively to grow hydroponic greens.

Hydroponics consumes 80-90% less water compared to traditional farming methods.

Marbong highlighted the importance and advantages of hydroponics farms to earn one's livelihood. He also demonstrated the mechanism of hydrophonics which greatly enriched the students.

The visit was led by Dr. Toshinungla, assistant professor of botany, along with her colleagues including Uttam Nath and Nijwm Basumatary.
