SUNGRATSU — The 87th general conference of the Sungratsu Students’ Union (SSU) got underway at Senden Salang in Sungratsu village in Mokokchung district on Wednesday on theme “Ayimjem Shisashir (roughly translated as smart students).”

Speaking at the inaugural programme, the theme speaker, Rev. Sentisashi Aier, senior pastor of Kohima Ao Baptist Church (KABA), stated that the old education system was driven by hard work basing only on memorisation. He, however, stated there is a paradigm shift in the education system today which is driven by experimental teaching, interaction, integrated and inquiry driven teaching.

Stating that the world today is driven by smart people and smart systems, Aier has stressed on the need to be smarter every time and to study whether they are a burden or blessing to the society. He added that education should be pursued in a smart way because a smart student is one who is intelligent as well as one who has gathered enough resources available than others.

Also pointing out that bookish knowledge alone is not enough to become smart students, he has stressed on incorporating skills along with education and talents. The speaker asserted that education should help one to earn livelihood.

He also added that getting education without character won’t make one smart students.

As the theme suggested, he stated that to be smart student, one should not always be a spectator or audience but participate in life.

More than 350 students from various districts of Nagaland are attending the three-day conference where they will participate in an array of activities with special focus on handicraft, cultural dance and discussion on social and students related issues.
