Southern ASU edge out MT Youth Club to enter semis

Southern Angami Students’ Union (SASU) became the first team to enter into the semi-finals of the ongoing students’ (Late Kekuozalie and Late Vikhozo) memorial soccer tournament organised by Angami Students’ Union under the theme Goal for Peace at Kohima Local Ground. Playing the first quarter final match, Southern ASU edged out MT Youth Club in a tie-breaker as the teams were locked in 2-2 goals during the 105 minutes of play (90 minutes + 15 minutes extra time). SASU went into lead when their striker T.S Shelminthung (10) netted the first goal in the 26th minute. But, the joyous occasion turned into penalization with yellow card as he dropped the flag-post celebrating the goal. Moreover, they would not keep hold of their celebrations too long as MT Youth Club equalized through Enos Ayemi excellent header in the 36th minute to end the first half in 1-1 draw.
In the breather half, SASU striker again found the net after a flurry of clear passes in their Rivals danger zone as Shelminthung once again calmly beat the custodian for the lead in the 68th minute. This time too, MT Youth Club immediately reacted with the equalizer within next couple of minutes through Akavi Ayemi’s solo effort in the 70th minute to the end 90 minutes play in 2-2 draw.
Both sides tried level best to surpass into either nets, but failed to capitalize during the 15 minute extra time.
However, the tie-breaker favoured SASU as they managed to pierce all five shots while MT Youth Club managed only four.
Athuo Pfozumi of MT Youth Club bagged the Player of the first quarter final match while his team walked away with Quarter-finalist allowance of Rs 7500. The first quarter-final was graced by State Project Officer Johnny Rongmei Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority, Home Department. The 2nd quarter final match between Naga United and DEF Kohima will be held on October 12 with Kewetso Mero (IPS) DIG Headquarters as patron.
