Guwahati flash floods [caption id="attachment_121034" align="alignleft" width="550"] Vehicles wade through water logging National Highway in Guwahati after heavy showers on Tuesday.[/caption] Dimapur, June 13 (EMN): As several parts of Guwahati continue to reel under flash floods following heavy downpour on Tuesday, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal directed the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) and the Kamrup (M) administration to remain prepared to tackle the flood situation. Dispur Last Gate, Beltola Wireless, Noonmati, Hengrabari, GS Road, Ganeshguri, Fancy Bazar, Ambari, Bamunimaidam, Maligaon, Shantipur besides other areas are some of the worst hit areas. Commuters and several vehicles remain stranded due to the artificial floods. Traffic snarls were also reported from many parts of the city. The chief minister further directed to carry out rescue operations whenever required. Deputy Commissioner Dr. M. Angamuthu also inspected the scenario in different parts of the city following CM Sonowal’s directives. Adding to this, a wall of the police barrack also collapsed DY365 Bureau report stated.

Waterlogging in Guwahati after heavy rains, 5 relief camps set up 

Guwahati(PTI): After witnessing massive water logging across the state capital due to incessant rains today, Kamrup Metropolitan district authority in Assam has set up five relief camps for the affected people. “I have asked to set up five relief camps immediately at various locations in Guwahati. We have already started distributing relief materials to people at these identified places,” Kamrup Metropolitan Deputy Commissioner M Angamuthu told PTI. The authority has identified Rajgarh, Dhirenpara, Bhaskar Nagar, Noonmati and Nepali Basti areas for setting up of the relief camps. “We have started distributing food items, drinking water and medicines to affected people. We will continue to provide all support till water recedes and people go back to their homes,” Angamuthu said. The Deputy Commissioner said landslides have occurred at three places - Kamakhya, Zoo Road and Chandmari- in Guwahati, which constitutes most of the Kamrup Metropolitan district. “There is no casualty till now due to rains,” he said. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has asked the administration to remain ready for any emergency. “Chief Minister Sonowal asked both district administration and Guwahati Development department to be ready with relief materials and reach out to the affected people in case of any urgency,” an official release said. In view of incessant rains lashing Guwahati since this morning, massive water logging and floods has thrown life out of gear. Hundreds of houses went under water, the impact of which was severe due to water flowing down from the nearby hills. Knee-deep water flooded all major roads of the city and created havoc in traffic management. Commuters were stranded for hours due to waterlogging.

Two killed in flash floods

Guwahati,(IANS): Two persons were killed due to incessant rains that sparked flash floods in Assam’s Guwahati city on Tuesday, disrupting normal life and causing immense suffering to lakhs of people. Kamrup Deputy Commissioner M. Angamuthu said the dead included a school student and a man who were electrocuted on Zoo Road. “We have ordered a probe into the incident,” he said. He said rescue operations were on to help the marooned in different areas of the city. The incessant rains that began on Tuesday morning blocked the two main arterial routes in the city, triggering traffic congestion and submerging several localities. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was to go to Karbi Anglong to address two public rallies regarding the forthcoming election to the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC). The programme was cancelled as the chopper he was supposed to take failed to take of due to heavy rains. The Chief Minister even failed to reach his office at Janata Bhavan in Assam’s Dispur area due to water logging on roads. The administration ordered the closure of schools and other educational institutions on Wednesday. There were reports of landslides from some areas in the city.

More rainfall in the next 48 hours

Dimapur (EMN): The Kamrup (Metropolitan) district administration has declared a holiday on Wednesday in view of the meteorological department’s prediction of mre rains in the next 48 hours. As such educational institutions and all other government offices will remain closed. On the other hand, rehabilitation camps have been set up in 5 locations of the city. Alert has been issued for landslide probabilities in Nilachal Hills, Chandmari, Zoo-Road DY365 Bureau report stated. The administration has further urged the residents of the city not to use personal vehicles in the next two days.
