SON win 9 medals in National Games

Special Olympic Nagaland team returned home with 9 medals after taking part in the 4th National Games for Disabled held at Bhubaneswar, Odisha from November 1 to 5. SON team of 28 special athletes was led by coach Renjamo Nguille and coach Temsuba Amri and competet in 5 disciplines; athletics, badminton, bocce, football and table tennis. The team of Chumremo Kikon, Mhachio Ngullie, Watimerem, Bhupender Sharma and Chingkam Konyak bagged the silver medal in 5 A-side football. The special athletes from the state comprising of Muwase, Ripanthong, Phamsa Konyak and Ngunlem Konyak bagged the bronze medal in 4X100 relay.
Special athlete Yeanto Konyak and Nokyai Konyak bagged Silver while Penjeih Konyak got gold in table tennis. In badminton, Chemkhak Konyak clinched the gold medal and Wangshok Konyak bagged bronze medal. In 100 meter race, Ngunlem konyak clinched the gold medal while Phamsa Konyak and Ngontai Konyak bagged the silver and bronze medal respectively.
Abilities 2014, the National Games for Specially-abled persons was conducted by Special Olympics Bharat at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar, Odisha from November 1-5 where Special Olympics Bharat- Orissa Chapter hosted the Games for 750 athletes to compete in 10 disciplines such as athletics, aquatics, badminton, bocce, football, unified football, table tennis, cricket, volleyball, kho-kho and kabaddi. The Games is a complete showcase of the abilities of the persons with special needs, to compete at National level after marking their grounds at district and state level meets. The games was conducted as per rules of different disability federations i.e. Special Olympics (Intellectually Disabled), Hearing Impaired (All India Sports Council for Deaf) and Visually Impaired and Orthopedically Handicapped (Paralympics Committee of India).
SON Team is from Silver Lines Academy, Prodigal Homes, Development Association of Nagaland and former Students of Deaf Biblical Ministry of Dimapur District, Cherry Blossom School & NAPAD (Nagaland Parents Association for Disabled) of Kohima District, Mon District Handicapped Society and Disable’s Home Kiphire.
Meanwhile, SON has expressed gratitude to Governor Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya and DCCI- Dimapur Chamber of Commerce & Industries for their timely financial assistance enabling the State team to take part in this National Games.
Earlier, another SON team led by coach Woben Jami and three special athletes namely; Kilumo Ezung, Moangkaba Lkr and Vividson Sha participated in 2nd Preparatory Camp at Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh from October 27 to November 1, a selection ground for 2015 World Summer Games to be held at Los Angeles, USA.
