Dimapur, March 7 (EMN): Chief Secretary Temjen Toy on Saturday said that Nagaland has not given due attention to solid waste management, and expressed ‘shock’ at learning about the ‘lack of basic civic sense, especially in remote areas’.

According to a DIPR report, Toy made these observations during his visit to the newly installed Hydraulic Bailing Press Machine and Material Recovery Facility Unit in Chümoukedima.

Stating that solid waste management and treatment of sewage has become “a big issue”, Toy said citizen’s participation, besides government actions, is also needed to tackle the issue.

He assured to address the problems faced by the karamcharis (workers), according to the report.

Principal Secretary of Urban Development and Municipal Affairs, Himato Zhimomi emphasised on the urgent need for recycling of bio medical waste.

Informing that the department has submitted a concept paper to turn Chümoukedima into “a model waste recycling in Nagaland,” Zhimomi said that once it is approved by the ‘leadership’, other towns would aspire to emulate it.

Altogether, 11 bailing machines for all the districts have been bought and urban local bodies given assistance for construction of material recovery facility, the report added.
