Solar lights to illuminate Meghalaya

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Meghalaya government has sanctioned Rs 25 crore for installation of solar lights under the Green City Project (GCP), which will replace the existing street lights.
“The Rs 25-crore project has been earmarked and sanctioned by the state government for the purpose of installing over 378 points of solar lights in the urban areas and cities of the state,” Meghalaya Power Corporation Limited Engineer’s Association president B Khonglah said.Khonglah said this in the course of his address at the XI General Conference of the association held in the city. “We have identified the locations which will include government institutions and educational institutions in Shillong while for Tura, the locations would soon be finalized,” added Khonglah.
He said the government has so far sanctioned Rs 5 crore for implementation of the first phase of the project, which has been entrusted with the Philips Electronic India Limited. To begin with, the implementing company has been asked to install at least 3 points of solar lights in Shillong, the performance of which would be examined before handing over the entire installation work to the company, he added.
Keeping in mind possible cases of theft of batteries and other equipment, the state power department has decided to install the LED solar street lights in protected locations, he added.
