Mission Nagaland Smile Train Camp will be giving free surgery to correct cleft lips and deformed palates from September 12 to the 15 in Oking Hospital and Research Centre in Kohima. An elite group of surgeons from Shija Hospital of Imphal will perform corrective surgeries without any charge. The main objective of Mission Nagaland is to reach out to children in state who are suffering due to lack of proper information and awareness, transportation, accommodations and other financial constraints.
According to a rough estimate, there are more than 2, 500 cases of children suffering from the two physical deformities. They remain “hidden” due to social issues and misconceptions, a concerned source said. It also said that children suffering with unrepaired clefts cannot eat or speak properly and are denied the right to attend schools or hold a job. The mission will provide and sponsor free treatment and other medical requirements to the patients along with free diagnostic facilities, speech therapy, free counseling and rehabilitation services, according to the information.
The Nagaland chapter of the Smile Train mission incorporates the USA center, Shija Hospitals and Research Institute of Imphal in Manipur, Oking Hospital of Kohima in Nagaland, NGO Explore Nagaland from Kohima in Nagaland and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan in Nagaland.
