DIMAPUR — A skill training of rural youth (STRY) on organic farming, organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Tuensang, is underway at the KVK conference hall, Tuensang town, with special emphasis on vermicompost production and kitchen gardening. It commenced on November 7.

Youth aged 19 to 33 are taking part in the week-long training programme, which will conclude on November 13.

According to a press release from the KVK, such skill-based training is necessary because it broadens the mindset of the youth, particularly those from non-agriculture backgrounds. It also mentioned that trainees are motivated to try out the technologies highlighted with support from KVK Tuensang.

They would also receive vermin beds and winter vegetable seeds in order to promote organic farming.

The training programme is being organised in collaboration with the State Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (SAMETI), Nagaland, and is being sponsored by the National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE), Hyderabad, as part of the National Mission on Agriculture Extension and Technology (NMAET) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.

According to the course director, Longma Yanger Pongen, assistant chief technical officer (ACTO) (Agricultural Extension), the various topics being covered during the programme include organic farming, vermicompost making, integrated pest management, kitchen gardening, financial management, integrated nutrient management, produce marketing, etc.

Samual Sangtam ACTO (Agronomy), K Michael Pienyu ACTO (Plant Protection), Dr. Temjennungsang ACTO (Animal Science), Dr. Watisenla Imsong, senior research fellow, National Innovations in Climate Resilient Agriculture project, Yanger I Kichu, FM, and Hongsangsonla Chang, area coordinator, Livelihoods Mission (NRLM), Tuensang, are the resource persons for the STRY programme.
