DIMAPUR — The Department of Political Science, St. Joseph University (SJU), Chümoukedima, celebrated the International Day of Peace on the theme ‘Action for peace’ at the university auditorium, on September 21.

The guest speaker of the programme, Dr. Chubatola Aier, principal of C-Edge College, Chümoukedima , delivered a talk on the essence of ‘Peace-making and peace-keeping,’ the college in a press release stated.

Aier said that whenever there is a call to action, every individual should realise the urgency and responsibility, and act for peace towards attaining sustainable peace and development for a sustainable future.

Peace, according to her “is a state of being, which cannot be captured literally, but can only be instilled” and can be understood on the nuances of the external and internal dimensions, of social, cultural, political and community coexistence and of one’s mental and emotional state of being.

She also shared that the search for peace and the application of it at both global, individual and within the contextualised environment, is largely dependent on the educational sector.

Reiterating the four pillars of UNESCO – Learning to know, to do, to be and to live together ¬– the academician said stated that ‘Peace’ today has become so crucial and a big subject matter.

And as peace cannot be resolved by an individual’s effort, the very essence of togetherness is what will mark its victory. And so, it calls for an action of global solidarity and of a global event for building a peaceful and sustainable world, which can be created together, Aier said.

She also called for overcome conflicts through peace and taking proactive measures to accelerate progress towards sustainable development goals ensuring inclusivity and equity.

“And that if anything must have any impact, we must concentrate on the sustainability element to attain the “sustainable peace for sustainable development,” she said.

Further, stating that the International Day of Peace is not just about ending conflicts but about changing one’s behavior, she added that the act of forgiveness, acceptance, tolerance, reconciliation and mitigating conflicts, are the keys to global peace.

“Peace is possible, it is attainable” and for this everybody must be valued peace makers and peace keepers, Aier added.

Highlights of the event included special songs by the PG first semester and UG first semester students, a speech on the topic ‘Peace can do better’ by Pangyau (PG first semester), and painting competition.
