SJS students shine at ISRO young scientist programme

DIMAPUR — Ann Maria PS, a class 9 student of St. John School in Diphupar ‘B’ under Chümoukedima district, won the second position in project presentation at the young scientist programme called ‘Yuva Vigyani Karyakram’ (YUVIKA), a two-week residential training programme for school children, organised by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) at NESAC, Shillong, from May 12 to the 24th.

An update from St. John School, Diphupar ‘B’ stated that ten students from Nagaland including five of its students attended the programme. The event saw participation of 350 students from various states and union territories at the prestigious ISRO programme.

The school was represented by Andrew Billung, Mercy Z Tungoe, Zuchubeni P Ngullie, Bhavana Pradhan and Ann Maria PS, all from 9th standard. It stated that the students had the unique opportunity to engage with some of the brightest minds in the field of space science and technology.

It mentioned that Kemisanuo Rio also received the achievement in the year 2019.

The young scientist programme also known as YUVIKA aims to ignite the passion for space science among the youth of India. The initiative by ISRO provided a platform for talented students to experience the exciting world of space research and development.

The programme included lectures, hands-on sessions, visits to facilities and other places of interest, project work, etc. Besides, yoga sessions and indoor sports were also arranged for the students.

The programme covered many interesting activities like model rocket-making and launching, telescope assembly, robotics and robot assembly, interactive games etc. In addition to lectures on different interesting topics, the event covered astronomy, astrophysics, cosmology, Chandrayaan, Mangalyaan, Gaganyaan, different space applications etc.

Report stated that live demonstrations on sounding rocket launching, live session from Antarctica were arranged to make the programme a memorable one for the young scientists. The major attraction of the programme was an online interactive session with the selected Indian astronauts.

Meanwhile, the school headmaster, Johny Abraham, expressed immense pride in the students’ achievements and applauded them for setting an inspiring example for their peers.
