DIMAPUR — As part of the weeklong college week of St. Joseph College (Autonomous), Jakhama, a cultural day was organised at the college indoor stadium, on Friday.
The day witnessed events like modern dance and acapella competitions besides the main Mr. and Miss Josephite contest, the college informed in an update.
Ten teams – Centaur, Cyclops, Dragon, Goblin, Golem, Griffin Minotaur, Phoenix, Werewolf and Yeti – are taking part in various sporting events like Indoor games, outdoor games and athletics.
The college week started on October 30 with the opening ceremony organised by the SJC (A) games and sports committee.
The opening ceremony commenced with the hoisting of the college flag by the special guest Kethosituo Sekhose, Director of Youth Resource and Sports (YRS), Nagaland.
The special guest, in his address, stressed on the importance of such annual events and said that “Organising annual weeks with a multitude of sporting activities is a means to promote physical fitness and overall well-being.”
The YRS director said that the department is focusing on young and energetic individuals who can contribute to the future of society.
Sekhose also disclosed that the YRS department is initiating an innovative approach to introduce sports tourism as a means of promoting sports in a unique way.
He acknowledged the potential of sports tourism as a catalyst for socio-economic growth and development. While recognising St. Joseph’s College as a breeding ground for future leaders, he further encouraged the future leaders in the audience to play a pivotal role in fostering inclusive development.
“The ceremony set a vibrant tone for the Annual College Week 2023, aligning sports and tradition with a promising vision for the future,” it stated.
Earlier, Rev. Sr. Sunitha D Souza, RJM, pronounced invocation prayer, followed by welcome address delivered by Dr. Fr. George Keduolhou Angami, the college principal.
The cultural day came to an end with the Mr. and Miss Josephite contest. Moile Konyak of team Dragon was crowned Miss Josephite 2023 while Hiredila Sangtam of team Griffin was declared runner-up.
In the Mister category, Rukukhoto Ltu of team Centaur was crowned as Mister Josephite 2023 while Zhozo Chizo of team Cyclops took the runner-up title.
The closing ceremony of the annual college week will be held on November 4.
