Sit held in Diphu over non- implementation of Article 244 (A)
DIPHU — The Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC), Karbi Nimso Chinthur Asong (KNCA), a leading Karbi women organisation and Karbi Students’ Association (KSA) jointly staged a sit-in infront of Semson Sing Ingti Memorial Park on Friday, against non- implementation of Article 244(A) of the Constitution (Autonomous State) and the unsettled border issue.
The party (ASDC) also submitted a memorandum to Union Home Minister Amit Shah in this regard.
Participating in the demonstration, the party general secretary and former chief executive member (CEM) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Jotson Bey said the ASDC, KSA and KNCA organised the joint a sit-in to press their demand for autonomous state under the provision of Article 244(A) of the Indian Constitution.
Bey said that successive governments at the Centre have failed to implement Article 244 (A) for the hill districts of Assam comprising Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong and NC Hills.
The BJP party before coming to power had given commitment that if the party comes to power at the Centre, then Article 244(A) of the Constitution will be implemented. Now the BJP-led NDA government should keep their commitment and implement the same, the former CEM said.
He also reiterated that the inter-state and inter-district boundaries of Karbi Anglong should be resolved. Blaming the Assam government for not taking any initiative on the border issue, the party general secretary alleged that the Government of Assam is encouraging people from Meghalaya, Hojai district, Nagaon district and Nagaland to encroach on the Karbi Anglong land.
Demanding the government to evict the encroachers occupying Karbi Anglong, he also said that the government should give up its ‘give and take’ policy.
Bey also alleged that in the name of delimitation of a new legislative assembly constituency in West Karbi Anglong, some Karbi Anglong areas have been included into Hojai and Roha LACs.
The proposed LAC named Amri LAC will be carved out by bifurcating the present Baithalangso LAC.
If the delimitation process is completed, then West Karbi Anglong will have Amri as a new LAC and the present Baithalangso LAC will be renamed as Rongkhang LAC.
