Earlier, ASUS has celebrated its golden jubilee on April 14 at U Soso Tham auditorium in Shillong under the theme ‘Rise and Lead’. Walking down the memory lane by reminiscing his life as a student during the late 60s, the first president of ASUS in 1968, Kevisiezolie Suohu observed that things have changed tremendously as the world have become very challenging. With the change of time, he noted that ‘our good old values’ are being put to test in varied ways. He urged the students to introspect oneself and ask ‘where do I stand today?’ Reposing high hopes on the present generation to build a secure future for the Nagas, Suohu advised the Angami students to always stand for the truth, a trait which the Angamis are the proud inheritors. He also released the jubilee souvenir magazine. Thepfulhouvi Solo, an alumni (1957-59) reiterated that the ‘ethical moral values’ is what makes the Angamis different from all other tribes. Therefore, he also urged upon the students to keep this value alive wherever they go and in whatever they do. Former ASUS general secretary, Thejao Vihienuo who studied in Shillong from 1972-78, quoting the then DC Scott insisted the students to always remain busy no matter what they become in life or what profession they are in, lest a time will come when society may no longer needs them. Lhouvirielie Üsou, convenor organising committee in his greetings said since its establishment in 1968, ASUS has come a long way to become one of the leading student’s bodies in shilling with its theme ‘Rise and Lead.’ Taking pride in the fact that ASUS has always been a trend setter and done things through example and the things it has achieved during the past 50 years, Üsou maintained that jubilee celebration has been an opportunity to reflect upon the history of the union and the important contributions it has made to the personal, academic development and unity that has brought over thousands of students, past and present, As the union mark its 50 years of success, Üsou told the gathering that it has every reason to be proud of its past and be excited about its future, and was optimistic that ASUS will continue its vocation of preparing students to engage successfully with the world for many years to come. Acknowledging the pioneers, he expressed delight that Shillong has produced many educationists, bureaucrats, businessmen, public leaders and politicians etc who have become remarkable citizens in the state today. A visual presentation with the theme ‘Lest we forget’, a collection of old photographs of its activities from the last 50 years was showcased and also glimpses of its golden jubilee celebration 2018 at Shillong.
