Imphal, June 26 (EMN):
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Jagat Prakash Nadda has named Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi, a senior party leader, as new president of BJP Manipur.

The national general secretary and headquarters in-charge of BJP, Arun Singh in an appointment order stated, “BJP National President Jagat Prakash Nadda has appointed Smti. Sharda Devi as state president of Manipur BJP. This appointment comes into immediate effect”.

Congratulating the new party president of the state on hearing the news, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Saturday took to twitter and wrote, “Congratulations Smt. Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi Ji on having appointed as President of BJP Manipur Pradesh. Under your abled leadership, the party will be able to achieve greater heights and fulfil the aspirations of the people of Manipur”.

Later after the felicitation, he also tweeted, “Felicitated our newly appointed BJP Manipur President at my office. The appointment of Smt Sharda Devi Ji as President of @BJP4Manipur has yet again reaffirmed BJP’s commitment on empowering women & acknowledging talent of individuals irrespective of their gender or background”.

Former national vice-president (2014-2016) Sharda Devi has been working in the party for the past 26 years after she formally joined the party in June 1995.

The 54-year-old former schoolteacher was once elected as a councillor in Imphal municipal election from ward number seven. She had also served as member of various national boards under the ministry of Textiles and Ministry of Women and Child apart from holding the various positions in the state and national level committees of the party.

It may be mentioned that the BJP national spokesperson, Sambit Patra was on a three-day visit to the northeastern border state from June 19 onwards and held meetings with party workers and state BJP leaders later the day.

Though the reason behind his visit to the state was not known officially, reliable sources claimed that the main purpose of Sambit Patra’s visit was to discuss issues pertaining to the appointment of BJP Manipur Pradesh president as the post had been lying vacant since the death of prof. S Tikendra Singh due to Covid-19 complication on May 13 this year.
