Shamator Village Council alleges attacks on Tikhir properties, seeking an impartial probe, compensation, rehabilitation and stronger security arrangements
DIMAPUR — Shamator Village Council has alleged that Tikhir families and their properties in Shamator town were targeted in the recent violence connected to tensions in Pungro subdivision of Kiphire district, and questioned whether adequate steps were taken to prevent further destruction.
In a condemnation statement issued on Friday, the council stated that houses had been burnt and vandalised, while schoolbags, books and children’s belongings, along with essential documents, were destroyed. It added that the losses had disrupted the lives and livelihoods of families who had spent years rebuilding their homes and futures.
The council maintained that tensions originating in Pungro should not be used as a pretext to target Tikhir residents in Shamator.
Questioning the preventive measures taken by the district administration, the council said reports of arson over three consecutive days raised concerns about the adequacy of security arrangements. It sought an explanation from the authorities on the steps taken to protect residents and prevent further damage.
The statement also called for an impartial investigation into allegations that women wearing traditional Yimkhiung attire had obstructed security personnel from reaching affected locations. The council said the circumstances surrounding any such obstruction should be established through an impartial inquiry.
It further referred to allegations that some individuals associated with the Yimkhiung community had directed Yimkhiung tenants to vacate rented accommodation belonging to Tikhir residents, followed by the destruction of properties. The council called for the claims to be investigated and for legal action against anyone found responsible.
It demanded compensation for verified losses suffered by affected families, churches, shopkeepers, tenants and other property owners, along with assistance to rebuild homes and restore livelihoods. It also called for stronger security arrangements to prevent further violence, displacement or retaliation.
The council urged the elected representative of the 58 Shamator Assembly constituency to address the concerns of affected residents, saying an elected representative had a responsibility to serve all constituents without discrimination or favouritism.
Reiterating its commitment to peaceful coexistence among communities in Shamator, the council said no individual or community should be held collectively responsible for grievances or actions attributed to others. It urged the government and district administration to ensure equal protection under the law and take steps to restore peace and normalcy.
