Sensitisation programme for girl students held in Kohima

DIMAPUR — Kohima district administration, in collaboration with District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Kohima, organised an orientation and sensitisation programme under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) for girl students on November 3 at D Block panchayat hall.

Delivering the keynote address, Moasunep K Jingru, EAC of Kohima and nodal officer of Mission Shakti, gave a brief introduction of BBBP scheme. He urged the society to not to discriminate between boys and girls saying that girls are no lesser.

He further urged the girls to empower themselves and help break down the stereotypical gender roles in the society, stated an update from DHEW, Kohima.

Nagali Shohe, advocate-cum-panel lawyer of Kohima DLSA, highlighted the various laws and acts pertaining to the girl child such as POCSO Act, sexual offences, right to education, child marriage and child labour. She stated the different ways through which a victim of the above crimes could get legal remedies.

Dr. Vijoho, medical officer of Jakhama, gave a brief explanation on ‘sexual health, menstrual health and mental health.’ He talked about the social and cultural taboos connected to those three issues and how to overcome it.

He also emphasise on the dangers of early pregnancy and the issue of anxiety and depression in women.

Toli K Assumi, centre administrator of One Stop Centre (OSC), highlighted the issues faced by women and girls like domestic violence, sexual assault, cyber crimes and rape. She stated that women and girls could avail various services such as lodging FIR, legal assistance, medical care, counseling and temporary shelter through OSC.

She further stated that any woman or girl could avail those services through the Childline nos. 1098, 181 and 112 for emergency cases.

The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) scheme was highlighted by Vimenu Richa, DEO for PMMVY, DHEW, Kohima. She explained at length the objectives of the scheme, who could apply, documents required and where to apply.

The programme was chaired by Vikeduozo Sorhie, gender specialist at DHEW, Kohima, while the vote of thanks was delivered by Bodin Pradan, joint secretary of D Block panchayat and an invocation prayer was said by TP Thapa from Kharazu Christian Revival Church.
