IMPHAL — Former Speaker of Manipur assembly and minister Irengbam Hemochandra Singh resigned from the primary membership of Indian National Congress (INC) ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

Informing this during a press conference in Imphal on Sunday, the five-time Congress MLA from Singjamei Assembly Constituency in Imphal West district announced his resignation from the INC, citing “lack of faith and confidence” with the party.

In his resignation letter to President Keisham Meghachandra of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), a copy which was also addressed to INC President Malikarjun Kharge, Hemochandra wrote: “I would like to convey through this letter my complete lack of faith and confidence with the Indian National Congress anymore”.

“Therefore, I tender my resignation from the primary membership of the party as well as all other posts which I have been holding so far with immediate effect,” he added.

Replying to a query, Hemochandra said that he has not yet decided to align with any political party, while likening the Congress party to a sinking ship.

He also said that his decision to resign from Congress was not driven by aspirations for the upcoming Lok Sabha election.

It may be mentioned that Hemochandra, who was also the former working president of MPCC, was defeated by his rival Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Yumnam Khemchand in the previous state assembly election.
