DIMAPUR — On the occasion of 79th Independence Day, the national vice president of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and chairman of MARCOFED, Dr. M Chuba, called on Havildar (retired) Mering Ao, a distinguished veteran of the 3rd Assam Rifles in Sungratsu village under Mokokchung district.
Havilder Mering Ao (105 years) and his wife Sentiyangla Ao (100 years) were felicitated during the meeting. Dr. Chuba Ao presented the Indian national flag to the centenarian war hero as a tribute to his lifelong service and dedication to the nation.
“It is a great pleasure to meet such an extraordinary individual who has lived over a century and served the country with unparalleled courage,” Dr. Chuba Ao said in a press release.

He mentioned that Havilder Mering Ao was awarded the Shaurya Chakra on April 27, 1960, by the then President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, for his acts of gallantry. He retired from service in November 1960 after an illustrious career in the armed forces.
He stated that the veteran remains a living testament to India’s rich legacy of bravery and patriotism adding that his spirit, even at 105, continues to inspire the people of Nagaland and the nation at large.
