Dimapur, May 22 (EMN): Seminar on the role of educational institutions in promoting sustainable peace in Nagaland was organised on May 21 at Catholic Association of Nagaland (CAN) building.
The main objective of the seminar was to make educational institutions a place of peace, equip values, skills and attitudes needed for peace promotion and to integrate peace education into school curriculum.
Rokovino, teacher animator of Sacred Heart High School, Kuzama, invoked God’s presence followed by a welcome address delivered by Alino S Chishi, district coordinator of Peace Channel.
Alino appreciated the participants for their zeal towards promoting sustainable peace in Nagaland. She quoted Mahatma Gandhi, “If we are to teach real peace in this world, we will have to begin with children.” She expressed the need for a paradigm shift by incorporating value-based and skilled-based education to enhance individual’s capacity that fits to any kind of situation both in convention and non-conventional settings.
She encouraged the participants to work for peace, advocate human rights and to be combatants of peace.
Rosline Richa, Assistant Researcher of SCERT, spoke on the significance of the role of education and its outreach programmes such as training and capacity building, communication, creating public awareness, scientific and applied research, sharing and access to information, networking, partnerships etc. She elucidated that peace, stability, human rights and effective governance are based on the rule of law, which are important conduits for sustainable development.
In her concluding note, she stressed on the need to update pedagogy and educational resources in order to address the 21st century challenges. She also emphasised on the four pillars of education namely learning to know, learning to do, learning to be, and learning to live together for sustainable development.
