Dimapur, May 19 (EMN): Youth group Peace Channel conducted a seminar on the topic of role of educational institutions in building ‘sustainable peace’ in Nagaland, on Sat. May 18 at the Pangti Church conference hall, in Wokha.
The event, carrying the slogan “peace to all,” was conducted for teachers and heads of the institutions.
Updates that were received here on Sunday offered details about the programme.

The principal of Libemo Memorial School, Surojit Josiah Mitra, gave the keynote address. He emphasised on India’s “unity in diversity.” Because of the country’s diverse culture and religion, he said, there have been instances where peace became ‘the necessity.’

‘There is still unrest and disharmony in our country because of our unforgiving nature. We may verbally speak or talk about forgiving people but we often don’t forget it and still continuous to have hatred and pain within,” he said.

Mitra was stated to have talked to the gathering about the two major factors that disturb peace in Nagaland: “Terrorism” and “communal riots (violence in the name of religion).”

A lecturer, N Yanbothung Ezung was the resource person for the seminar. He spoke about the concept of peace, peace building, peace education and sustainable peace, the updates stated.

Emphasising on the theme of the seminar, Ezung explained the 17 sustainable development goals (SDG) to transform the world. He spoke about how effective an educational institution’s work can be towards promoting sustainable peace in the state.

The institutions can do so by ensuring an inclusive and equitable quality education for all and promote lifelong learning, the resource person said. It can also serve as a double-edged sword by promoting peace and providing safe environment, the gathering was told.

The programme concluded with an open discussion and a discourse on an action plan. Heads of the institutions and teachers participated in the discussions by speaking about their concerns and views.

Besides, they spoke about their ideas on how to better and enhance peace initiatives and activities to promote sustainable peace in the state of Nagaland, the updates stated.

The participants also shared on the importance of inner peace in peace building which has to begin from the self for attaining a sustainable peace in the state.

Altogether 23 participants from different schools and colleges were stated to have attended the programme.
