[dropcap]S[/dropcap]elf-confidence is the belief that one has in one’s own ability to do things. It involves a strong sense of self-worth and consciousness of one’s own abilities. It is a positive and realistic assessment of one’s own capacities and the belief that one is capable of achieving the desired results. If you are self-confident you have the awareness of your own efficiency and an objective understanding of your strengths and weaknesses. Self-confidence is different from over confidence.
Over confidence is not a realistic assessment of one’s own capacities. It is pure arrogance that leads one into troubles and upsets relationship with others. Arrogant people rush in where the wise and the prudent do not dare. The arrogant people are destructive and domineering. They never apologize for their mistake nor admit their incapacities. They bring more disorder and discord within the group rather than unity and peace. If such people are at “the helm of affairs, productivity will suffer for they do not have the capabilities required for the ‘ job nor are they able to harness the capacities of those working along with them. They become a thorn in the flesh or an obstacle on the way.
On the other hand lack of self-confidence is again a self-defeating factor. In order to take up a project and to accomplish it successfully you need a lot of courage and confidence. If you are deficient in self-confidence or lack in courage, you will hesitate to take up a project and begin to express doubt about it’s success. Such people begin to express negative feelings at the very beginning, thus preparing the way for perdition. Those who have a very low level of self- confidence, when faced with a challenging and risky job begin to exhibit doubt, fear, anxiety and indecision. As they lack courage they begin to postpone their project to some other day.
The work never gets started
Self-confidence can be improved by various methods. One way of impro\fing is by adopting someone as your model. Then study his manner of working, organizing and conducting the affairs of his institute. Try to imitate him and believe for some time that you are in his shoes until you can be in your own. Practice those steps that will improve your self-confidence such as looking smart and confident, taking up an easy and commanding position before others, speak to the people looking at the face with ease and an occassional smile. Conquer your fear which is often the result of your ignorance regarding your project at hand. Be a master in your field. Remember that some risks and set-backs are just part of the venture. They will be met as and when they appear.
