Dimapur, Sep. 3 (EMN): As part of the first-phase ‘Seeds of love’ project, vegetable seedlings such as brinjal, tomato, bottle gourd and mango ginger bulbs were distributed to around 100 beneficiaries on September 3.
The ‘Seeds of love’ is an initiative of Entrepreneurs Guild launched by the advisor of Horticulture Mhathung Yanthan on August 25 at Green Park. The project was an outcome of the group's social contribution during this pandemic to encourage people to help themselves by growing vegetables at their own backyard.
The primary objective of the project was to show love by sharing vegetable seeds or saplings to friends, families, and neighbours in order to promote and encourage kitchen and backyard gardening, an update from the group stated.
“This project is just the sowing of that seed to inculcate the seed to grow our own vegetables ourselves in an urban set up like Dimapur,” it stated.
The beneficiaries included residents from Dilai gate area up to Patkai Christian College in Dimapur and Bor Lengri. It informed that the group would monitor the progress of the kitchen garden to ensure success of the project.
The project is a collaboration of Horticulture department, Central Institute of Horticulture (CIH) under the Ministry of Agriculture, which helps in technical and logistic supports.
It stated that the group had already conducted an online training on vegetable cultivation on August 17 in association with CIH.
The group also stated that on seeing the noble initiative, the Dimapur Ao Baptist Arogo has also willingly come forward in support of the project by sponsoring for 10,000 seedlings.
It informed that the second-phase distribution of winter vegetable seeds of five different crops would be held in mid-September. The group members are overwhelmed by the positive response of the citizens, as people showed keen interest in starting their own kitchen garden. Overwhelmed by the positive response, the group has decided to accommodate as much as possible in the seed distribution.
It further stated that it has received requests for vegetable seeds from as far as Mokokchung and Kohima town.
