Security situation in NE improved ‘significantly’ since 2014 — MHA

DIMAPUR — The security situation in North Eastern Region (NER) has improved significantly since 2014, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said in its latest update.

The Yung Aung-led NSCN  along with 15 organisations of the other Northeast states continue to be tagged as “terrorist organisation and unlawful association” under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

The ministry informed that in 2022 there was a 76% reduction in insurgency incidents, 90% in security forces casualties and 97% in civilian deaths.

In comparison, the year 2023 witnessed a slight increase in number of incidents reported, extremists killed, security forces and civilians killed.

The security situation in Manipur in 2023 was “poor” compared to the other Northeast regions, as per the MHA report. Manipur reported the highest number of security incidents in 2023 with 187 incidents, 33 extremists killed, 184 extremists arrested, seven security forces killed, 35 civilians killed, 80 extremists surrendered, 31 arms surrendered, 49 arms recovered and 33 persons kidnapped.

Following Manipur was Assam with eight security incidents, four extremists killed, 21 extremists arrested, 1445 extremists surrendered, 397 arms surrendered and 11 arms recovered. However, there was no report of any casualty on the part of security forces or civilians, the update stated.

After Assam, Nagaland reported 35 incidents, one extremist was killed, 161 extremists were arrested, one civilian was killed, 13 extremists surrendered, five arms were recovered, 68 arms surrendered and 49 persons were kidnapped. There was nil report of security forces killed.

Mizoram reported nil security incidents while Meghalaya reported the arrest of 11 extremists. Tripura reported the arrest of five extremists, the surrender of 15 extremists and one arms recovered.

Arunachal Pradesh reported 13 security incidents, two extremists killed, 25 extremists surrendered, one security personnel killed, two civilians killed, 42 extremists surrendered, 26 arms surrendered, 18 arms recovered and 17 persons kidnapped.
