DIMAPUR — The 2nd edition of Naga Alphameric was released on November 30 by Deputy Chief Minister of Nagaland TR Zeliang in the presence of the advisory board in Peren.

The programme was chaired by Rev. Izieteilung Terieng, member of the advisory board, according to an update.

In his opening remark, he stated that the Naga Alphameric was authored by Haisoyi Ndang more than 20 years back. However, due to certain circumstances, the project could not be carried forward.

Nevertheless, realising the indispensable need for "our own alphabet to fully suit the local accent", an advisory board was set up in 2025 to take the project forward.

Meanwhile, Julian Raxam from Deakin University, Australia, came to notice that this project was lying dormant. Therefore, he reignited the project by communicating with the author. Thus the project was awakened from a long slumber.

While releasing the 2nd edition, TR expressed his appreciation and gratitude to the author and advisory board for coming up with such innovation. He emphasised that such work is possible only when some individual gives overriding effort because it is very intricate and complex.

He further said that it requires the intervention and involvement of intellectuals in order to promote and educate the mass. He shared his concern that it needs to begin from the lower class so that the learning process will be effective and widely publicised.

The author also presented a brief background of the Naga Alphameric, stating that he derived the Alphameric from the various Naga cultural items so that the Alphameric has a deep connection with "our Naga Culture”.

He further said that the Naga Alphameric is unique because of its three-dimensional characteristic, which enables it to fully stress the typical accent of the Naga community dialect. Deakin University Australia has initiated to unicode Naga Alphameric so as to make it an internationally accepted alphabet.
