Our Correspondent Kohima, Sep. 21 (EMN): A peace-themed march coupled with a message for the environment marked International Day of Peace on September 21 in Kohima. Bharat Scouts and Guides of the district observed International Day of Peace at the old MLA hostel junction and took to a peace march till the police headquarters’ point. They cleaned the area there. Delivering a speech about the significance of the day, district organising commissioner for guides, Kiyakhrienuo Solo, highlighted the history of International Day of Peace. It was started by the United Nations in the year 1981. Until 2002, it was observed on every third Tuesday of September. Later, the UN Assembly decided to observe it on September 21. “This day is dedicated to ideals of peace both within and among all the nations and people. It is a day to look beyond borders, religion and race to connect with each other for common goal,” Solo said. Solo highlighted the theme for this year ‘climate action for peace.’ The theme focuses on the need to combat Climate Change as way to protect and promote peace throughout the world, the gathering was told. She urged the people to work for change for a better world, and to make commitments to ensuring a cleaner and greener environment. “Let us celebrate peace day every single day,” she added. The joint chief executive officer of Kohima’s Smart City establishment, Avelu Ruho, delivered a speech at the programme. The official said Climate Change is a threat to world peace, and urged the gathering to conserve nature and the environment. She urged the people to support the Kohima Smart City mission too. The additional deputy commissioner for Kohima Lithrongla Tongpi Rutsa flagged off the peace rally. The scouts and guides held up placards that had positive slogans and declaration of positive goals toward creating ‘a better world,’ and to conserve energy and combating Climate Change as part of the year’s theme “Climate Action for Peace.”
