Schools, colleges in Manipur closed until June 4 due to floods
IMPHAL — The Manipur government has announced the closure of all higher education institutions and schools (government, government-aided, private, and central) along with the suspension of all activities related to the admission process until June 4 due to floods.
Joint Secretary of Higher and Technical Education, L Dolie Devi and Director of the Directorate of Education (Schools), L Nandakumar Singh, have issued separate orders in this regard.
In an order on June 2, Devi stated that the decision was made due to the significant number of houses and roads that are still flooded, and even those areas where the water has receded are not yet habitable.
In a similar order, Singh stated that the government has ordered the closure of schools, along with all activities related to the admission process, until June 4 in response to the widespread destruction and inconveniences caused to many households and institutions across the state due to incessant rain and floods.
Earlier, the state government had directed schools to remain closed until May 31 as a precautionary measure. Additionally, all undergraduate examinations scheduled for May 29–31, in the state have been postponed. Recently, classes in all departments and centres of Manipur University have also been cancelled.
Meanwhile, water levels in flood-affected areas have been slowly receding in and around Imphal town, including MG Avenue, Thangal Bazar, and Paona. However, many localities, including several colonies in Imphal East district, are still flodded.
It may be mentioned that Cyclone Remal triggered heavy rainfall on May 28 and 29 in the state, resulting in widespread floods in low-lying areas and landslides in hilly areas. So far, five people—two in Senapati and three in Imphal West district—have died.
