Sazolie College releases book ‘State, governance and development in Northeast India’
Dimapur, April 14 (EMN): A book titled “State, governance and development in Northeast India” published by the research committee of Sazolie College was launched by the college’s principal, Dr. Gopal Basnet, during a programme held at the college’s auditorium on April 11.
An update from Sazolie College stated that the book was an outcome of a two-day national seminar, which was jointly organised by the department of Sociology and Research Committee in 2019. It was edited by Dr. Thepfusalie Theunuo, Dr. Narola Dangti and Dr. Kangzangding Thou.
Discussing the book, Dr. Narola Dangti, stated that it explored the idea of a state as understood as a territorial unit, ordered by a sovereign power with a centralised civil rule and how the idea was translated in the Northeastern part of India. She added that the book examined the pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial Northeastern states of India.
She mentioned that the book looked into the disparities of urbanisation and development as well as identity politics: issues and challenges and the idea of rekindling tradition and collating modernity through developmental policies and political development.
The book also highlighted the emergence of the modern state system and the role of policymakers which involves planners, policymakers, government executives, academicians and researchers to understand issues of critical importance related to development, identity, civil society, gender, environment and urbanisation.
The report also stated that the book is ideal for those who are pursuing research and those who intend to pursue research. The foreword to the book was written by Virginius Xaxa, former professor of Sociology at Delhi School of Economics, and published by DVS Publishers, Guwahati.
The book launch programme was chaired by Medosano Mary, assistant professor of the History department at Sazolie College.
