Dimapur, Sep 2 (EMN): Aimed at preserving the rich cultural heritage, Sazolie College, Jotsoma, observed its 8th Cultural Day on September 1, jointly organised by the Cultural Committee and Students’ Council of the College.
The college observed cultural day annually with the objective to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures of the students of different communities from Nagaland and outside studying in the institution and also to create awareness among the students about the need to preserve their rich cultural heritage. The event is also aimed at educating the students to respect the different cultures and people they encounter or come across in their lives.
The programme was compered by Oli and Rüyota of Semester I.
Waluniba Jamir, college vice principal, spoke on the importance of identity and stressed that an individual’s identity should be preserved and maintained by learning one’s own mother tongue, folklore and good cultural traditions and practices. He said the good qualities of our forefathers like honesty, volunteering or extension of help to others, integrity of character and respect for elders should not be forgotten but emulated and practised by the present generation. He also gave a brief narration of the origin of the Ao Nagas and sang an Ao folksong.
The programme included presentation of folksongs, folk-fusion and re-enactment of folktales by different groups like the Angami, Sumi, Lotha, Ao, Chakesang and Eastern Naga tribes. A display of the different traditional costumes was another highlight of the programme.
The Ao students were declared winners for their sterling performance of a drama based on the legend of Jina and Etiben, while the Eastern Naga students and the Angami students were awarded the second and third positions respectively for their equally brilliant performances of bamboo dance and folk-fusion choir rendition.
In the class-wise category, Ms Tsiosela of Semester V was awarded the first position for her bollywood dance. The invocation prayer was said by Veralü Vero, Assistant Professor of English, while the welcome address and vote of thanks were delivered Uka Carara, president of Students’ Council and Sonye Khing, cultural secretary of Students’ Council respectively.
