DIMAPUR — A Skill Training of Rural Youth (STRY) programme on vermicomposting was organised by the State Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (SAMETI), Medziphema, in association with National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE), Hyderabad from the November 18 to the 23rd.
The training programme was aimed at imparting skill-based training to rural youths in the age group of 18-40 years on Agri. and allied based vocational areas to promote employment, stated a press release issued by SAMETI, Medziphema.
The training covered topics including introduction to vermicomposting and its uses, vermicomposting materials/biomass, methods of vermicomposting, types of vermi beds, low cost vermi beds, construction of vermi bed base, harvesting of vermicompost, harvesting of earthworms, storage and packaging of vermicompost, vermiwash and its uses and economics of vermi-composting.
Resource persons for the training programme were Dr. Moasunep, junior SMS, bio-control lab and Limabenla, Agri. inspector, IETC Medziphema.
In the valedictory programme, Dr. Watimongla Jamir, Director of SAMETI and Principal, IETC, spoke on the importance of organic manure like vermicompost in farming and its production through easily available raw materials.
Jamir expressed optimism that the training programme would be beneficial not only for skill and economic development but also to the environment.
Tiajungla Longchar, Deputy Project Director, SAMETI and training coordinator chaired the programme and delivered the vote of thanks.
A total of 20 rural youths were trained during the course of six days.
