‘Saberi’ to receive Sahidul Alom Award from MWS

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he first Sahidul Alom Choudhury Memorial Award, instituted by Minority Welfare Society (MWS) Guwahati in memory of Sahidul Alom Choudhury, five time MLA from Algapur, Hailakandi and two time Minister in the Government of Assam, will be presented to Maulana Abul Hussain Mazumdar ‘Saberi’ on Sunday.
The name of ‘Saberi’ was chosen for the Award by a jury of eminent persons constituted for the purpose. ‘Saberi’ who is an MA in English and Arabic, also holds the MM (Madrassa) degree to his credit. He was the Principal of Hailakandi Title Madrassa (1971-72) and Senior Lecturer in English at Lala Rural College in Hailakandi District from 1973 until his retirement in 2006. He has several published work in Arabic, Bengali, English and Urdu to his credit.The Maulana claims his ancestry to the Mughal dynasty. His forefather, Saber Mohammad, had migrated from Pratapgarh in Uttar Pradesh to Kanchanpur in Hailakandi District of Barak Valley. Hence, the suffix ‘Saberi’ to his name.
The Award presentation coincides with the 18th Annual General Meeting-cum- Annual Function of the Minority Welfare Society (MWS) to be held on April 27, 2014 at the Murshidul Alom Memorial Hall, Last Gate, Guwahati. Various competitions and programmes such as qirat, quiz, art, extempore speech and awards to meritorious students will be organised on the occasion.
Dr Rezia Sultana Memorial Award will also be handed over to an outstanding women achiever on this occasion. The second volume of the annual journal of MWS ‘Barak’ will be released on the occasion. Contributions from NRI residents of Barak Valley origin now residing in faraway lands such as Abu Dhabi, Australia, Germany, Saudi Arabia and USA are the highlights of the latest issue of the journal.
MWS consists of those minority community households who trace their origin in Barak Valley and reside in Guwahati and its outskirts today. MWS renders several services to its member families besides felicitating outstanding students, arranging interest-free micro finance for entrepreneurs and running the ‘Shadi Bureau’ for helping parents to identify prospective partners for their marriageable sons and daughters.
Eminent personalities belonging to the community such as Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhury, President, Samajwadi Party, Assam State unit; Abu Saleh Najmuddin, former Minister, Assam; Abdul Malik, former State Election Commissioner, Assam; and Raina Khanam Choudhury, former HoD, Arabic Department, Gauhati University are expected to address the AGM.
